Publishing partnership
Hybrid publishing has a reputation, and a lot of it is deserved. Here is exactly what we do, what it costs, what you keep, and what we will not do at any price.
The short version
You fund the production. We do the publishing — editorial, design, print, distribution, and the long tail after launch. We register the copyright in your name, and every edition we print carries your copyright notice. You grant us the exclusive right to publish and to place the work in other media, and we share what it earns: 50% of net receipts to you, rising to 75% and then 90% as the book matures.*
The difference between a good partnership and a bad one is whether the house has anything at stake. We publish our own list through the same imprints, the same editors, the same printers and the same distribution. Every process we put an author through is one we run on ourselves first.
What we do
Launch plan, retail and metadata setup, review-copy outreach, and paid advertising where it earns its place. Scope is set in your quote, and we tell you where it ends.*
The process
You send the manuscript or the proposal. We read it. If it is not a fit for one of our three houses we say so, and we tell you why.
We build the publishing plan for your specific book — formats, print quantity, channels, schedule — and quote it. Scope, cost and deliverables are agreed in writing before any work begins. No work starts on a handshake.
Developmental edit first, then line, copy and proof. You see every pass. Nothing goes to design until the text is finished.
Cover, interior, and press files for every format you have contracted. You approve the cover before it is built out.
ISBNs, metadata, retail and wholesale setup, print run or print-on-demand, and an on-sale date we hold you to and hold ourselves to.
Sales reporting, reprints, and the long tail. A book is a fifteen-year asset. We treat the first ninety days as the beginning of the work, not the end of it.
The floor
These are the commitments we make to every author on our list, and we put them in the agreement.
* Availability depends on the publishing package. Not every title runs through every channel.
